Cruel Mistress

we gather here

we line today

for sunlight to refract tears

across the curtains of the years

fate was cruel

when she stole them away

until my dying day

i’d watch the bees fall from the sky

so many hailstones

a sign of natures’ callousness

a sign of natures’ grace

until my final day

i’d witness a rabbit

as fuzz grew and hair fell

into the writhing soil

back into natures’ fickle embrace

we gather here

we line today

for sunlight to refract tears

across the curtains of the years

fate was cruel

when she stole them away

until my dying day

I’d be hiding in the corner

with nothing to do but wonder

about the curves your engine took

at the speed of a gazelle

but none of the grace

until my final day

I almost spoke

I nearly broke the spell

but each time tears shook

my heart in its’ frail shell

I swallowed the snakes

we gather here

we line today

for sunlight to refract tears

across the curtains of the years

fate was cruel

when she stole them away

Until my dying day

we’d gathered mountains of stones

and built a wall

between us and the cruel

never willing to admit

that with our bleeding wounds

resting in empty rooms

we were always the prey

one eye open

but I gave what I got

I did not require the strength

to leave with any grace

or forthought

now my running

becomes your race
