Brother, deceased

It only takes a moment

for a world to fall to ruin

A phone ringing against the dark

then silence

Lions dressed in neon

A dolls’ house

for a hiding place

from tears you cannot understand

your own river canyon face

is incomprehensible

You only know you have been forgotten

that this is the end

The world of hollow eyes

punctuated by awkward stares

that flicker away

with the speed of a candle going out

Dreams the only world you care for now

The only ones who care

A quiet room

A locked door

A procession of grief

You don’t know why they mourn

but you recognize being a lone oak

among a valley of aggressive thorns

Now

swiftly losing leaves

Now

that you have become an afterthought

A doll that barely breathes
